Using a Backchannel as Formative Assessment:
Backchanneling can be a stream of intelligence providing a real-time snapshot of a learner's understanding, and offering the teacher an immediate opportunity to adjust instruction, respond, and clarify. Students in a backchannel are highly involved, highly active learners. They ask questions, analyze, evaluate, discuss, debate, solve problems, shift roles between teaching and learning, and reflect. Each of these ephemeral learner outputs is valuable feedback that can help the teacher---or the learner---make necessary changes and keep on course. Backchanneling Tools: Todays Meet and Padlet .
